2022 Lieutenant Laurence Gillmor Sherman Award Recipient

Cadet MWO Katrina Poirier
3234 Manitoba Horse RCACC

Cadet MWO Katrina Poirier is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts Degree at l’Université de Saint Boniface in her first language and intends to pursue further education in the field of Psychology. She hopes that continuing her post-secondary education will build knowledge and competencies that she will use in her career and daily life.

She completed her General Training in Vernon and then attended Air Rifle and Full Bore Marksmanship Training at Whitehorse and Connaught in the summers of 2017 – 2019. She was a Staff Cadet in 2020 and 2021. She has achieved the Green, Red, Silver and National Stars of Excellence. From 2016 to 2019 she achieved Excellence in Band and was a Distinguished Marksman from 2016-2021. She received the Expedition Cup and was awarded the Six Year Long Service Medal. She has participated in the Silver and Gold Star and Regional Expeditions. She completed her Standard First Aid Training and Year 5 Workshops in 2019. From a shy individual who joined Cadets, she, through her various leadership courses and experiences, became her Corps’ Company Sergeant Major.

She has spent many hours volunteering with local non-profit organizations such as the Sugar Shack and The Village Connection Thrift Store in St Pierre-Joly. She has also volunteered with the Red River Valley Food Bank and the Morris Stampede. Volunteering taught her the value of team work as well as the amount of help that is required to keep volunteer organizations running so they can support their communities.

She obtained Excellence in Physical Fitness three times, the last in 2020-21. She has maintained her fitness level through hiking, field training expeditions, canoeing, skiing, snowshoeing and summer biathlon.
