The 2022 Hubbell Awards Recipients


The Hubbell Awards Recipients, September 22, 2022.

At a formal ceremony on Thursday, September 22, 2022, the 2022 Hubbell Awards were presented to twelve Manitoba Cadets. These Cadets, four Sea Cadets, two Army Cadet and six Air Cadets, were chosen from many highly qualified applicants. The Hubbell Award recipients; their families; the host, Mr. Len Isleifson, MLA; guest speaker, BGen Jamie Speiser-Blanchet; and other dignitaries, attended the ceremony in the Manitoba Legislative Building.

This year's ceremony began with introductory remarks from MGen (Retd) Dennis Tabbernor, President - Hubbell Awards Incorporated, Gen (Retd) Raymond Henault, Patron The Hubbell Awards Inc. and Mr. Len Isleifson, Member of The Legislative Assembly for Brandon East and Manitoba’s Special Envoy for Military Affairs. These remarks were followed by a keynote address from Brigadier-General Jamie Speiser-Blanchet, Commander of the National Cadet and Junior Canadian Ranger Support Group.

After the speeches, the Hubbell Awards were presented to the Cadets. In addition to The Hubbell Awards, each of the Cadets received a bursary from the Manitoba Government. Presenting those bursaries, on behalf of the Manitoba Government, was Mr. Len Isleifson, Member of The Legislative Assembly for Brandon East and Manitoba’s Special Envoy for Military Affairs.

A reception, in the Rotunda of the Manitoba Legislative Building, followed the presentation of the scholarships.

2022 Guest Speaker

Brigadier-General Jamie Speiser-Blanchet, CD
Commander of the Cadets and Junior Canadian Rangers

Brigadier-General Jamie Speiser-Blanchet was born in Chicoutimi, Quebec. She joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1990 and graduated from the Royal Military College of Canada (RMC) in 1994 with a degree in Computer Engineering.

Earning her pilot wings in March 1996 on the CH146 Griffon helicopter, her postings include 430e Escadron tactique d’hélicoptères in Valcartier, 1 Wing Headquarters in Kingston, 1 Canadian Air Division Headquarters in Winnipeg and 403 Helicopter Operational Training Squadron in Gagetown.

BGen Speiser-Blanchet deployed as a helicopter pilot during United Nations and NATO missions in Haiti and Bosnia and was appointed Deputy Commander (Operations) for JTF-IMPACT in Kuwait. In Canada, she has deployed on domestic operations in response to regional emergencies and support to other government agencies. She has served in high profile staff appointments as military assistant to the Minister of National Defence and as the Special Advisor to the Chief of the Defence Staff. Her last command was Commander of the Canadian Forces Intelligence Group. Brigadier-General Speiser-Blanchet holds a Masters degree in Defence Studies from RMC and a Masters degree in Politics and Policy from Deakin University in Australia.

A mother of three, BGen Speiser-Blanchet is honoured to be given the stewardship of one of Canada’s most important youth programs in her position of Commander, Cadets and Junior Canadian Rangers.

2022 Surgeon Captain Gordon P. Fahrni, DSC, MD Award Recipient

Cadet CPO2 Tayne Krishka
49 RCSCC John Travers Cornwell, VC

Cadet CPO2 Tayne Krishka will attend the University of Manitoba this Fall to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering Degree at the Price Faculty of Engineering specializing in environmental courses. She aspires to one day design and implement new ways to combat environmental issues such as air and water pollution.

As a CPO2 at John Travers Cornwell, VC Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps, she instructed Junior Cadets in leadership, instructional techniques and Positive Social Relations for Youth. She has been a clarinetist in the Corps band, a member of the marksmanship team and earned Top Junior Shot Award and advanced to the National Cadet Marksmanship Competition in Victoria, BC. She has her CanSail Level 4 and has participated in three out of Province regattas including the Regional Cadet Sailing Competition. In 2020 she was chosen to attend a weeklong Domestic Tall Ship Deployment in Victoria, BC. She has been a Staff Cadet at the Virtual Cadet Training Centre instructing Virtual Instruction Techniques.

She has volunteered more than 100 hours at a local pet store and has volunteered at her High School, where she was involved with the Education for Sustainable Development Committee and the Graduation Committee helping to plan their safe-grad dinner and dance.

She was intimately involved in the development of the Cadets in her Corps during COVID by helping develop a positive and welcoming online environment. She achieved the Gold Level Fitness Award, won the Chocolate Bar Regatta, placed fourth in the fleet Comox Cup Regatta and ran the RCAF 5K. She keeps fit with running and yoga.

2022 Manitoba Navy League Division Award Recipient

Cadet CPO2 Arina Tseragotin
25 RCSCC Crusader

Cadet CPO2 Arina Tseragotin will be attending the University of Manitoba, Faculty of Science this Fall studying Astronomy and Physics with a double minor in Computer Science and Geological Science. Her long-term goal is to receive a PhD in Astrophysics under the Canadian Space Agency or become a professor hoping to one day to participate in projects that will be influential in making human history.

She enrolled in Cadets at 14 and has been a strong participant in her Corps and Corps extracurricular opportunities, such as Volunteering and Seamanship Club, receiving the Award of Merit in her first year. She attended a Basic Sail Course at HMCS Quadra Cadet Training Centre receiving her CANSail 1 and 2 and followed by her Personal Craft Operator Card, Standard First Aid Qualification, CPR and AED training. She was a member of the Squadron Guard Division and in 2020 was recognized as the Best Junior Cadet. She has been appointed a Gunner, the Communications PO and Regulating PO. She was the Master of Ceremonies for the Squadron’s 69th Annual Review where she received the Cadet of the Year Award and the Royal Canadian Legion Medal of Excellence.

In her school she was a Peer Mentor with the Peer Tutoring Programme teaching pre-calculus mathematics and sciences. She also helped some students improve their English language skills. She was the Media Executive director for her school’s diversity club and was in a GREEN Club where one of their biggest achievements was cleaning the school indoor garden that had been abandoned.

She has received the Bronze Level Duke of Edinburgh Award and is working towards her Silver. She participated in Cross Country, placing first in the Junior Varsity Girls Category, as well as Track and Field. She has also played tennis competitively and during COVID has kept herself fit by exercising multiple times a week and hopes to join her university running club.

2022 Naval Officers' Association of Canada - Winnipeg Branch Scholarship Award Recipient

Cadet CPO1 Thierney Dignadice
77 RCSCC Daerwood

Cadet CPO1 Thierney Dignadice will be pursuing a Bachelor of Music Degree on Classical Clarinet at the University of Manitoba with a long-term goal of performing in larger professional ensembles such as classical or theatrical orchestras. She also hopes to advocate for, and improve, diversity and inclusion in these fields.

She joined Cadets in 2016 attending regular training nights and weekend training receiving an attendance award in her first year. She attended HMCS Quadra for two years and Intermediate Sail and received Cadet of the Week. She sailed at the Provincial Qualifying Regatta in Calgary and is a member of the LWCNS Sail Staff. She has received certification as an Assistant Race Officer and taken the Fundamental Course for sail instruction. Joining the Corps’ band as a clarinet player, she took over as Drum Major in 2018. At the end of the 20-21 training year, she was awarded the Lord Strathcona Medal. Her various leadership roles in the Corps lead to her being named Corps Coxswain.

She has volunteered at Notre Dame Church and was a server at Selkirk’s Our Daily Bread Soup Kitchen. She has also volunteered at St Francis Place, played holiday music for the residents of Tudor Personal Care Home and donated to the Gaynor Family Regional Library. In 2021 she represented her school and community at the national Poetry in Voice competition, placing first in the English stream.

She has consistently achieved the Gold Level of Excellence Fitness Standard. She played soccer for five years with the Tri-S Soccer association and in Selkirk’s recreational league. She has participated in track and field in Junior and Senior High and competed at the Junior High Provincial Outdoor Track Meet in 2017/18. In 2020 her High School relay team placed third in the High School Provincial Indoor Track Meet.

2022 Lieutenant Laurence Gillmor Sherman Award Recipient

Cadet MWO Katrina Poirier
3234 Manitoba Horse RCACC

Cadet MWO Katrina Poirier is pursuing a Bachelor of Arts Degree at l’Université de Saint Boniface in her first language and intends to pursue further education in the field of Psychology. She hopes that continuing her post-secondary education will build knowledge and competencies that she will use in her career and daily life.

She completed her General Training in Vernon and then attended Air Rifle and Full Bore Marksmanship Training at Whitehorse and Connaught in the summers of 2017 – 2019. She was a Staff Cadet in 2020 and 2021. She has achieved the Green, Red, Silver and National Stars of Excellence. From 2016 to 2019 she achieved Excellence in Band and was a Distinguished Marksman from 2016-2021. She received the Expedition Cup and was awarded the Six Year Long Service Medal. She has participated in the Silver and Gold Star and Regional Expeditions. She completed her Standard First Aid Training and Year 5 Workshops in 2019. From a shy individual who joined Cadets, she, through her various leadership courses and experiences, became her Corps’ Company Sergeant Major.

She has spent many hours volunteering with local non-profit organizations such as the Sugar Shack and The Village Connection Thrift Store in St Pierre-Joly. She has also volunteered with the Red River Valley Food Bank and the Morris Stampede. Volunteering taught her the value of team work as well as the amount of help that is required to keep volunteer organizations running so they can support their communities.

She obtained Excellence in Physical Fitness three times, the last in 2020-21. She has maintained her fitness level through hiking, field training expeditions, canoeing, skiing, snowshoeing and summer biathlon.

2022 Honorary Colonels' Army Cadet Scholarship Award Recipient

Cadet CWO Janelle Poirier
3234 Manitoba Horse RCACC

Cadet CWO Janelle Poirier is completing her first year of a four-year Bachelor’s Degree at the Université de Saint Boniface in her first language and is very passionate about the preservation of the French language. She hopes to attain a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and teach in the Division Scolaire Franco-Manitobaine. As a Métis person, she finds that the Université de Saint Boniface is a safe and welcoming place for members of the indigenous community.

She completed her General Training in Vernon and then attended Air Rifle Marksmanship and Air Rifle Instructor Training and was a Staff Cadet. She achieved the Green and Red Stars of Excellence. From 2016 to 2019 she achieved Excellence in Band and was a Distinguished Marksman from 2016-2021 and was awarded the Malczynski Award for Top Shot at Vernon CTC. She achieved the National Star of Excellence and received the Six Year Long Service Medal. She completed her Standard First Aid Training and Year 5 Workshops. She has participated in the Silver and Gold Star Expeditions in and completed Cadet Correspondent Training. As her Corps’ Regimental Sergeant Major, she led most training evenings, coordinating lessons and activities throughout the night.

She has participated in many volunteer opportunities with local non-profit organizations, including multiple food drives and local festivals, as well as volunteering extensively at the Otterburne Curling Club. She strives to set a good personal example for all those around her.

She obtained Excellence in Physical Fitness in 2020-21 and maintains her fitness level through regular hiking and camping and the expeditions she participated in.

2022 Janice and Barry Rempel Honorary Colonel's Air Cadet Scholarship Award Recipient

Cadet WO2 Manjot Sawhney
177 Air Canada RCACS

Cadet WO2 Manjot Sawhney will be attending the University of Manitoba to pursue a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering as a first step to eventually obtaining a Masters and Doctorate Degrees to help him achieve his life-long goal of becoming an Astronaut in the Canadian Astronaut Corps. He wishes to take advantage of every opportunity presented to him and looks forward to fulfilling his responsibilities of pushing the boundaries of human discovery through his contributions in the field of space exploration.

He attended the Drill and Ceremonial Instructor Course in 2019, was accepted into the Glider Pilot Training Course in 2020, subsequently cancelled due to COVID-19, and instead attended the Virtual Air Operations Course. He then obtained his Restricted Aeronautical Radio Operator’s License and worked as a Staff Cadet for the Virtual Instructional Techniques course. He has received the Royal Canadian Legion Cadet Medal of Excellence, Air Cadet Service Medal, Lord Strathcona Medal, the Squadron’s Matthew Pollock Memorial Award and the David Torok Memorial Award for leadership. He was also the Squadron’s Training Officer.

In his community he has volunteered for Tag Days and Legion Poppy sales and at the Winnipeg South Sikh Center Community Kitchen. He has also volunteered at the YMCA Leaders-in-Training Program, at Career Trek as a junior instructor and at school as a member of the Social Justice Committee. He was also President of the School Student Council organizing events to foster school spirit. In 2021 he obtained grant funding from the Passion2Purpose project and lead fellow students as they created care packages for burnout frontline healthcare workers.

He achieved the bronze, silver, and gold standard in fitness, and was awarded the Bronze Level Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. In 2019 he ran the RCAF run in the 5k category. He played soccer for his school and played double badminton. He is an avid runner, running for both his school’s cross country and track teams in inter-school competitions. He intends to join the Canadian Army Reserves in the near future and continue to improve his physical fitness.

Cadet Sawhney was not available for the Presentation evening, so his award was presented the following weekend by Hubbell President, MGen Tabbernor.

2022 Flight Sergeant Fred Marean Award Recipient

Cadet WO2 Oluwafifunmi Eso
199 St Vital RCACS

Cadet WO2 Oluwafifunmi Eso will be attending the University of Alberta to study neuroscience as a major for her undergraduate degree. She is looking forward to intellectually exploring the biological aspects of science that excite her and collaborating with like-minded individuals on research projects. Her long-term goal is to of become a scientist and an author.

She, as a WO2, was the acting B Squadron Commander. She has attended HMCS Quadra and CTC(v) for Music Training, and was a Staff Instructor for CTC(v). She was awarded the Sponsoring Committee Participation Award and the Air cadet Service Award in 2021. She represented her Squadron as a Model United Nations Delegate in 2021 and 2022. Throughout her Cadet years, working up through the ranks taught her the importance of teamwork, dedication, and collaborating with others who have different opinions.

She has been an active volunteer in retirement homes for the past four years and spent some of her time during COVID quarantine playing music and reading stories to the residents of Shaftesbury Park Retirement Residence. She volunteers with the St. Amant Foundation by participating in online activities geared towards inclusivity for individuals with autism living in her community. She has been a peer tutor for four years, and is a tutor with the Frontier College Program helping younger children with literacy and math skills. Through going to Remembrance Day Services with her Squadron she was able to build a connection with her community and continually explored that connection outside her Cadet Squadron through various organizations.

She has achieved the Excellence Fitness Badge and the Bronze Level Duke of Edinburgh Award and is working towards the Silver Level Duke of Edinburgh Award. She maintains her healthy lifestyle through meditation and journaling and has participated in track and field and basketball.

Cadet Eso is currently attending the University of Alberta and was not available for the Presentation evening, so her award was presented on August 22, 2022.

2022 Lieutenant Colonel (Retired) James Randolph Popplow, SBStJ, CD, BSc, BEd, MD, MSc, ABPM (AM), FACPM Award Recipient

Cadet WO2 Ethan Daniel Patzer
220 Red River RCACS

Cadet WO2 Ethan Patzer will be attending the University of Manitoba to follow his passion and earn a Bachelor of Computer Science Degree. He hopes to further his education with the aim of working in the field of server administration or programming. When he enters the work force, he plans to use his skillset to help his community.

He has completed the Basic Fitness Sports Course, placed second in his Squadron’s effective speaking competition and received the Silver Badge in the Provincial Effective Speaking Competition. He was also an expert Marksman and received the Top Cadet Level Award. He completed the Survival Instructors Course, received the Biathlon Silver Badge and the Top Level Cadet Award. In 2020 he received the Bronze Level Duke of Edinburgh Award and was awarded the Alen T. Hansen Trophy for “Influential leadership and inspiring others”. In 2021 he received the JM Koper Trophy. He served as a Flight Commander, and most recently, the Deputy Chief Warrant Officer responsible for the dress, drill, and deportment of his Squadron. While Flight Commander, his flight was “Top Flight” three out of four times.

Since 2016 he has been a volunteer at ‘The Urban’ which provides a safe haven, a sense of belonging and safety for anyone who needs it, serving the community with no restrictions, requirements or expectations. Serving his community however he can, will always be part of his life, whether through spending hours working with The Urban, volunteering through the Air Cadet program, or by supporting organizations with his computer science knowledge.

He maintains his physical fitness through many activities such as the Ride for Refuge Bikeathon, which he has completed numerous times. He also Completed a 60 km bike ride as part of his Bronze Level Duke of Edinburgh Award requirements. He also ran the CIBC Run for the Cure Marathon, participated in Biathlon attending the Provincial Competition and was a member of his school’s badminton team.

2022 Honorary Colonel Ben Van Ruiten, MSM, CD Award Recipient

Cadet WO2 Vrinda K Vyas
199 St Vital RCACS

Cadet WO2 Vrinda Vyas will be attending the University of British Columbia where she will be working towards her Bachelor of Science Degree to pursue her long-term goal of becoming either a Doctor or a Lawyer. She hopes to start a non-government organization that is specifically oriented to helping women and those of the LGBTQ+ community who have been wronged by society.

She was awarded the Top Cadet award in 2016. She attended the Basic Drill and Ceremonial Training and Drill and Ceremony Instructor Training at Vernon Cadet Training Centre. She commanded her Squadron Flag Party and Squadron Drill Team. She has also been awarded the Five-Year Service Medal. In her Squadron she had responsibility for about 80 Cadets. She led a team of six Senior Cadets to organize a virtual Mess Dinner and Scavenger Hunt for over 165 Cadets. She strives to improve her leadership ability every day.

In her community she has volunteered at Riverwood Square Retirement Living and assisted with their Remembrance Day Ceremonies for the last three years. She volunteered at the Golden Links Lodge Retirement Home as a COVID support worker and recreational assistant. She also volunteers at Dakota Community Centre. As Student Council Vice President she created an online newspaper to keep all students up to date with school news. She is striving to implement Gender Neutral changerooms in her school. She was the Folklorama Youth Ambassador for the Indian Pavilion. She works as a Brand Associate at Old Navy.

She maintains her fitness with running, setting and achieving her goal to run a 10 KM in August 2020. She is working towards her Silver Level Duke of Edinburgh Award, has played Junior Varsity Girls Basketball and in 2022 was Manager of the Varsity Girls Basketball. She achieved her Cadet Excellence Fitness Badge every year and led many fitness activities and tests.

Cadet Vyas is currently attending the University of British Columbia and was not available for the Presentation evening, so her award was presented on August 22, 2022.

2022 Honorary Colonel (Retired) George E. Chapman Q.C. Award Recipient

Cadet WO1 Aidyn Terrence Auguste Pearce
82 Brandon RCACS

Cadet WO1 Aidyn Pearce will attend Assiniboine Community College to begin the journey towards a career in aviation through engineering. Once a Civil Engineering Technician, he aims to progress to University to get a Bachelor’s Degree majoring in Physics. This will give him the prerequisite to specialize in Engineering and become an Aerospace Engineer.

He has attended camps for his General Training, Basic Aviation, Basic Aviation Technology and Aerospace, and Cadet Correspondent Courses. He attended the Level Five Workshop-Iron Stag, was a member of the Squadron Drum Line and competed in Effective Speaking at the Provincial level. He was staff at the CAP training course. He has received the following awards: Top level One Cadet, Mr. Terry Penton Memorial Award, Commanding Officers Honor Roll, Cobra Flight Top Cadet at Basic Aviation Technology and Aerospace Course, Top Level Four Cadet, Air Cadet Long Service Medal, Captain (Retired) Mark Delmage Terrebrate Foramina In Caelum Award for personal contribution to aviation, Mr. Jack Stacey Memorial Award for top Cadet Instructor and The Royal Canadian Legion Medal of Excellence. As an Instructor in his Squadron, he strove to present himself and his lessons at a high standard so other Cadets would also strive to achieve the same standard.

He has participated at every volunteer opportunity that his Squadron offered including poppy sales and Remembrance Day ceremonies with the Legion, fundraising events for the Squadron, The Brandon Rotary Club’s Bi-annual Book Sale, and community events such as the Children’s County Fair. He was also a leader of Jeunes Manitobaines dans les Communautés Associées run by the Division Scolaire Franco-Manitobaine.

He is completing his Bronze Level Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. He has trained and participated in five YMCA 5km races, with his team won the École La Source Volleyball Tournament, participated in two MHSA 5km cross country runs and served as a fitness advisor in his Cadet Squadron. He has attained Silver in the Cadet Physical Fitness Assessment.

2022 Royal Military Institute of Manitoba Award Recipient

Cadet PO1 Francheska Nicole Reyes
49 RCSCC John Travers Cornwell, VC

Cadet PO1 Francheska Reyes will attend the University of Manitoba to attain her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and then wishes to attain a Masters in Nursing to further her studies to become a Family Nurse Practitioner.

She has completed the following courses - Basic Seamanship, Ship's Boat Operator, and Geocaching Course. She was also part of the virtual Instructional Techniques Staff. She has participated in her Corp’s Guard and Drill Team and the Provincial and National Marksmanship Competitions. She was awarded or has achieved Top Guardsman Award, Junior Cadet of The Year Award, Level 4 Marksman, Level 2 Communications Badge, Pleasure Craft Operator Card and Restricted Operator's Certificate (Marine). She was the Divisional Petty Officer and an instructor and enjoyed helping the Cadets improve their knowledge and successfully move on to be ready for their next phase of training.

She volunteered at her school to lead a group called ‘Global Medical Aid Student’ to raise awareness and organize fundraisers to support Médecins Sans Frontières. She also organized a school blood drive for the Canadian Blood Services. She was also a member of Sisler High Against Cancer which raised awareness about cancer and to find ways to help within the community. She also volunteered in Lord Nelson School's After School Babysitting Program and Lord Nelson School Community BBQ and was a Remembrance Day Poppy Sale Volunteer.

She has participated in school basketball, volleyball, soccer, and swam outside of school. She likes to dance and that keeps her active and motivated in many different ways and she hopes to become better at as she continues on in the future.

2022 Manitoba Moose Scholarship Award Recipient

Cadet WO2 Lily Hadfield
199 St Vital RCACS

Cadet WO2 Lily Hadfield will attend the University of Winnipeg enrolled in Pre-Professional Occupational Therapy, a program that will allow her to immerse herself in the care and support of youth as a registered Occupational Therapist. Her education at the University of Winnipeg is the first step to making this career possible as she strives to work as a key contributor towards the improvement in the lives of many.

She joined Air Cadets in 2017 and quickly progressed to level 2 and subsequently received the Award of Top Recruit and Top Marksman. She has taken Basic Survival Training and has been a member of her Squadron’s Drill Team and a devoted member of the biathlon and marksmanship programs, competing in provincial level competitions for both. She was the Squadron’s Official Cadet Correspondent for the past three years and an instructor for all levels. She was accepted into the Aircraft Maintenance National summer training course. Other awards include - Top Junior NCO, the Sponsoring Committee Participation Award, Bronze Level Duke of Edinburgh Award and the Lord Strathcona Medal. She will receive her Air Cadet Service Medal and aspires to be her Squadron’s WO1 and focus on providing leadership to her squadron to ensure they thrive.

In her community she has participated annually at Remembrance Day Ceremonies. She has also participated in community cleanups, fundraising for her Squadron’s Sponsoring Committee and was a Volunteer Coach for the Girls Rugby Program. In school she was involved in collecting supplies for Siloam Mission and helped in the Festival Théâtre Jeunesse program run by her grade 12 peers.

In grade 10 she joined her high school rugby team, becoming a member of the Rugby community in Manitoba. She then joined the Wasps women's rugby club and this year joined the provincial U18 Rugby Sevens Team, and aspires to compete with them in the Canada Games this Summer. She runs on her own time and this helped her to participate at the provincial level for both biathlon and marksmanship.
